RESOLUTION V-97
RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING AN INTERGOVERNMENTAL TORNADO SIREN
ACTIVATION POLICY BETWEEN THE LEMONT FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT,
LEMONT TOWNSHIP AND VILLAGE OF LEMONT
WHEREAS, the Lemont Fire Protection District, Lemont Township and Village of
Lemont share a role in providing emergency notification to the public during periods of severe
weather; and
WHEREAS, the named local agencies have developed a policy governing the activation
of emergency notification sirens within the community; and
WHEREAS, the local agencies have worked together to formulate a policy which will
insure that emergency sirens are activated in a consistent fashion, and only during periods which
indicate a threat of damage to life and property.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lemont Fire Protection District,
Lemont Township and Village of Lemont hereby adopt a TORNADO SIREN ACTIVATION
POLICY which is attached as Exhibit A.

TORNADO SIREN ACTIVATION
I. DEFINITIONS:
A. SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
The threat of severe thunderstorms and damaging winds exists.
B. SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
A severe thunderstorm has been observed by the public, or detected by radar, and
persons in the warning area should take precautions.
C. TORNADO WATCH
Climatic conditions exist which could result in tornado activity within a defined area.
Tornado Watch bulletins will also state that severe thunderstorm activity is expected.
D. TORNADO WARNING
A tornado has been sighted in the defined area or has been detected by radar. Persons
in or near the area should take immediate cover or steps to insure safety.
E. SEVERE WEATHER STATEMENT
Issued by the National Weather Service during weather watches. Advises the status
of weather in the WATCH area.
F. UNCONFIRMED SIGHTING
A report that is received from one or more members of the general public and no
warning has been issued by the National Weather Service.
G. CONFIRMED SIGHTING
A report by an on or off -duty trained municipal employee, trained Skywarn weather
spotter, or Police or Fire personnel. This may be either an actual funnel or a rotating
wall cloud.
II. EMERGENCY ACTIVATION OF WARNING SYSTEMS
During a severe weather incident, local warning systems should be activated if:
A. A tornado or funnel cloud aloft is reported within the alert area, as designated
by Exhibit A.
1. Exhibit A designates the ten -mile radius which is based out of the center of
Lemont. The borders are: Rt. 59 to the West, I -80 to the south, Ogden (Rt.
34) to the North, Harlem Avenue (Rt. 43) to the East.
a. This alert area also includes the entire towns of:
Naperville Plainfiield
Joliet New Lenox
Downers Grove Hinsdale
Lisle Countryside
Hickory Hills Palos Hills
Orland Park Palos Park
Crest Hill
B. When reported that a tornado has touched down in Lemont Township.
C. Any time that there are clocked wind gusts in excess of 50 mph.
D. Any time the National Weather Service advises a Tornado Warning which
addresses the Village and Township.
III. There will NOT be an activation of an ALL CLEAR siren.
