R-316-94 Authorizing use of Railroad corridor through Downtown LemontVILLAGE OF LEMONT RESOLUTION NO. 31 DATE OF APPROVAL 5-S-91 WHEREAS, the State of Illinois has been studying high -speed rail service on a Chicago- to -St. Louis railroad corridor which passes through the Village of Lemont; and WHEREAS, the Village of Lemont has examined preliminary studies on high -speed rail provided by the Bureau of Railroads of the Illinois Department of Transportation; and WHEREAS, said studies recommend the implementation of high- speed rail service by the year 2000 A.D. using the Illinois Central right -of -way through several municipalities including Lemont; and WHEREAS, the proximity of the high -speed rail route to historic downtown Lemont and adjacent developed areas raises significant public concerns; and WHEREAS, recommended grade crossing closures will have an adverse affect on traffic circulation and accessibility in Lemont; and WHEREAS, the Village of Lemont would absorb the environmental impacts of trains traveling at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour without the benefit of direct access to the high -speed rail service; and WHEREAS, the use of the railroad corridor through downtown Lemont is contrary to the recommendations of the 1993 Lemont Comprehensive Plan and plans for the downtown area. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE OF LEMONT, COUNTIES OF COOK, DuPAGE AND WILL, THAT: The Village of Lemont hereby objects to the use of the Illinois Central Railroad right -of -way through Lemont for the purpose of providing high -speed rail service from Chicago to St. Louis, and hereby urges the Illinois Department of Transportation to consider alternate routes.
